What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic, the way I practice and teach it, is about helping your body remember how to adapt, heal, and express life more fully—using hands-on work with your spine, fascia, and nervous system instead of drugs or surgery.
Chiropractic starts with a simple but powerful idea: many health problems show up when the body can’t keep up with the stresses of life—physical, chemical, and emotional—and loses its ability to adapt. Rather than chasing symptoms, chiropractic looks for areas in the musculoskeletal and nervous systems that are stuck, overloaded, or not communicating well, and then gently helps them reset so your system can self-correct. The conditions chiropractors address are as wide-ranging as the nervous system itself.
All chiropractors follow a structured process to understand what your body needs before they ever deliver an adjustment. You’ll see familiar elements—consultation, detailed case history, physical examination, and, when appropriate, lab work or imaging like x‑rays—much like you would with a medical doctor. The uniquely chiropractic layer is the structural and functional assessment of your spine and related tissues, with special attention to how spinal motion affects nerve flow, muscle tone, posture patterns, and overall nervous system balance. That focused examination of spinal structure and function is what makes chiropractic different from other health-care approaches.
Your spine is a column of movable bones running from the base of your skull into the middle of your hips, forming a flexible, protective “housing” for your nervous system. From that column, 31 pairs of spinal nerves branch out through openings between the vertebrae and then weave into a vast network that touches virtually every tissue in your body. Life happens—accidents, falls, long hours at a desk, emotional overload, repetitive strain—and those stresses can lead to shifts or breakdowns in how the spinal segments move and relate to each other. When that happens, the nerve roots in those areas can become irritated or compressed, and the body may start to malfunction: pain, tightness, organ dysfunction, fatigue, brain fog, and more. Chiropractic teaches that by reducing or removing this irritation to spinal nerves—through precise adjustments and tonal work—you allow your body to operate more efficiently and more comfortably.
Education of a Chiropractor
Chiropractors attend four-year academic institutions where they receive an amount of classroom instruction comparable to, and in some areas greater than, a medical school program. The course of study for a Doctor of Chiropractic focuses on anatomy, physiology, chemistry, neurology, orthopedics, and various other health and biological sciences. Chiropractic training also includes an internship in which the student doctor assists in caring for patients in a clinical setting under the direct supervision of licensed doctors of chiropractic.
After graduating from chiropractic college, a new doctor must pass national board exams and state licensure exams before being allowed to practice. Once licensed, a chiropractor is required to complete yearly continuing-education coursework to maintain that license and stay current with evolving standards of care. When you compare classroom hours across core sciences, chiropractors and medical doctors both log thousands of hours in physiology, pathology, chemistry, bacteriology, diagnosis, neurology, imaging, psychology, obstetrics/gynecology, and orthopedics—reflecting deep training in the same foundational sciences, with chiropractic adding a unique emphasis on the spine and nervous system.
